“We were one of First Port City Bank’s First Customers”
First Port City Bank salutes the Gerald (Jerry) and Janice Long Family for their dedication to Agriculture and the many successes it has brought them through their hard work.
Dedication to agriculture, hard work, and treating people fairly are just a few of the phrases could be used to summarize Jerry’s biography. Born in 1948 to Woodrow and Earlene Long, Jerry graduated from Bainbridge High School in 1966 and went on to earn an Animal Science and Agronomy degree from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC) in 1969. Jerry then fulfilled his patriotic duty by serving in the Georgia Army National Guard for the next six years.
In 1973, Jerry started farming full time and never looked back, but he has always remembered where he came from. He married Janice McCorkle Long, a former educator with the Decatur County Board of Education for 20 years. Jerry and Janice have three children: Justin, who partners with Jerry in the family farm, Jared, who is employed as a Plant Foreman with National Beef and Jeanie who is an Instructional Design Coordinator for the Bush School of Government & Political Science at Texas A&M University. All three have obviously been very successful in their chosen careers.
Jerry has served as a great ambassador for the family farmer and agri-businesses throughout his life. He is a past president of Decatur County 4-H, past president and Charter member of Decatur County Young Farmers and a past president of Decatur County Farm Bureau. He currently serves as first Vice-President of the Georgia Farm Bureau, Treasurer of the Georgia Beef Board, is a member of both the Georgia Seed Arbitration Council and the Bainbridge Decatur County Industrial Authority and is a Director of Southern Farm Bureau Life Insurance Company. In addition, Jerry serves on the Board and is Treasurer of the Decatur County Farm Bureau.
“We have been with First Port City Bank since they opened back in 1974” said Jerry, “and First Port City Bank has been good to us”. “As a matter of fact, soon the fourth generation will be banking with First Port City Bank as Justin and his wife are expecting.
